Cool Cities

Modern cities are developing in a variety of ways as we can see here with respect to the UAE’s cities. This development has brought with it both positive and negative growth. In the following, I will look at the unenviable contribution that modern cities have on with respect to global warming. A look at how modern cities can minimize their energy usage and consequently reduce their carbon emission will also be considered. Finally, I will conclude by including my opinion regarding the practicality of environmentally friendly cities.

Let’s first look on how modern cities in UAE contribute in raising the percentage of carbon emissions. First of all, in the UAE, the development is so fast that it attracts outsiders but worries the ecologist; it consumes high levels of energy which makes it one of the highest rates of energy use. Each household on average has one to two cars which means fuel consumption is an at all time high in this region. Indoors, the cooling systems operate in such a way that people coming from outside would not feel the humidity, shopping malls and hotels being the number one attraction to expats.

The UAE had developed a certain criteria to solve the issues at hand. First, they will make use of shades and current wind to keep the temperature cool instead of air-conditioning. In addition, they are going to work on a project which counters the heat in a 1.4 million square metre plot close to Zayed Sport City Stadium (Foster). Other than that, for a global solution, they are building a city called Cool City, an energy saving investment that counter measures against traffic problems, which is going to be built by SDCJ, Japan and the Gulf region. Providing transportation like Monoriod, LRT and Solar ships, buildings like 50% echo tower and 30% echo residences.

In conclusion, I admire the way the UAE with its vast resources and unmatched funding are willing to be a global contributor to one of the world’s harshest issues in global warming, rather than avoiding it and focusing solely on development.
